🪖 Active Duty Retirement

Active Duty uses a straightforward Years of Service × Multiplier × Base Pay formula. There is no points system — every day counts equally.

1
Multiplier = YOS × 2.5% (Legacy) or 2.0% (BRS)
e.g. 22 years × 2.5% = 55% multiplier
💰
Monthly Pay = High-3 Average × Multiplier
e.g. $9,194 × 55% = $5,057/month

High-3: Average of the highest 36 months of base pay in your career.
Final Pay (pre-Sep 8, 1980): Uses your last month's base pay instead of High-3.
Minimum: 20 years of Active Duty service.

🎖️ Reserve & 🛡️ National Guard Retirement

Reserve and Guard retirement uses a points-based formula. Points accumulate throughout your career from multiple sources and are converted into equivalent service years via two separate division factors — then combined for a multiplier lookup.

1
AD Points ÷ 365 = Active Duty Equivalent Years
e.g. 7,851 AD points ÷ 365 = 21.51 years
2
Reserve / Guard Credit ÷ 360 = Reserve Equivalent Years
e.g. 1,183 reserve pts ÷ 360 = 3.29 years (Note: ÷360 not ÷365)
∑
Total = Step 1 + Step 2 → look up multiplier
21.51 + 3.29 = 24.80 yrs → 24 Yrs 9 Mos → Multiplier = 61.88%
💰
Monthly Pay = Base Pay × Multiplier (begins at age 60)
e.g. $9,194 × 61.88% = $5,691/month starting at age 60

SBP vs. Self-Investing Study — Educational Analysis Only
This study compares paying SBP premiums against investing those same dollars at a 10% annualized return. It is not financial advice. SBP provides guaranteed lifetime coverage; investments carry market risk and are not guaranteed. Consult a financial advisor before making SBP enrollment decisions.
⚙️ Study Inputs
Enter your monthly gross retirement pay. Annual ÷ 12 = monthly.
% per year (default: 10%)
% per year (4% = classic rule)
Assumptions: SBP Premium = 6.5% of gross pay SBP Annuity = 55% of gross pay Max SBP = 360 payments (30 yrs paid-up) Monthly compounding
🧠 Beyond the Numbers — Key Considerations
🛡️ SBP Advantages
  • Guaranteed for life — no market risk
  • COLA-adjusted (keeps up with inflation)
  • Paid-up after 30 years — coverage is then FREE
  • No investment knowledge required
  • Protects spouse regardless of how long they live
  • Cannot be "outlived" — longevity insurance
  • Premiums are pre-tax (reduces taxable income)
  • Government-backed guarantee
📈 Investing Advantages
  • Can accumulate significant wealth at 10%/yr
  • Portfolio can be inherited by children/heirs
  • Full control — access for emergencies
  • Not tied to retiree's death — available to family
  • Can outperform SBP if spouse does not outlive retiree
  • If spouse pre-deceases retiree, investment preserved
  • Flexible withdrawal strategy
  • Historical returns favor long-term equity investing
⚠️ Key Risks & Unknowns
  • Market risk: 10% is historical avg, not guaranteed
  • Sequence risk: Early bear market devastates portfolio
  • Longevity risk: Spouse could outlive the portfolio
  • SBP elections are largely irrevocable once made
  • If spouse pre-deceases, SBP premiums are lost (no refund)
  • Taxes on investment gains reduce net return
  • Behavioral risk — discipline to not spend the portfolio
🔑 Decision Factors
  • Age gap: Larger gap = SBP more valuable
  • Spouse health: Long lifespan favors SBP
  • Other income: Does spouse have own pension/SS?
  • Investment discipline: Can you commit to not spending?
  • Heirs: Want to leave estate? Investment wins.
  • Risk tolerance: Conservative = SBP. Aggressive = invest.
  • Many advisors recommend SBP + investing the remainder
🎖️ Grey Area Retiree
A Grey Area Retiree is a former National Guard or Reserve service member who has earned 20 qualifying years of service and stopped drilling, but has not yet reached the age required to collect their military pension. The standard age is 60 — but qualifying active duty service can reduce that significantly.
10 U.S.C. § 12731 — Reserve Component Retirement
📅 The "Grey Area" — Understanding the Gap
🟢 Active Service
Drilling, earning points, deploying. Building your 20 qualifying years. Points accumulate toward retirement formula.
⬜ The Grey Area
You're retired from service — but NOT collecting pay. You have your 20-year letter. This gap can be 5 to 20+ years depending on when you retired. Reduced retirement age (RRA) from qualifying orders shrinks this window.
💰 Pay Begins
At age 60 (standard) — or earlier if you earned RRA credit. Your full monthly retirement pay, TRICARE, and SBP all activate on this date.
💡 The Power of RRA: Every 90 days of qualifying active duty in a fiscal year (Oct 1–Sep 30) reduces your pay start age by 3 months. A member with five qualifying deployments could start drawing pay at 58 yrs 9 months instead of 60 — collecting an extra 15 months of paychecks before their peers see a dime.
🧮 Reduced Retirement Age (RRA) Calculator

Enter your mobilization periods below. The calculator applies the correct per-fiscal-year 90-day block rule (10 U.S.C. §12731) automatically. Only qualifying orders count — see the authority list below.

⚠️ Only these orders qualify for RRA credit (post Jan 28, 2008): §12301(a) War/NE mobilization · §12301(d) Voluntary mob · §12302 Presidential Reserve Call-Up · §12304 / §12304a / §12304b Selected Reserve Call-Up · §688 Retired officer AD · Contingency ops §101(a)(13). Annual Training, ADT, IDT drills, and most Title 32 orders do NOT count.

🪖 What You Have (and Don't Have) During the Grey Area

🔴 Critical Gap — Health Insurance: The biggest financial exposure during the grey area is health care. You are NOT eligible for full TRICARE until pay begins. Most grey area retirees must either purchase TRICARE Reserve Select (~\$261/mo individual or ~\$524/mo family in 2026), obtain coverage through an employer, or use the VA. Plan for this cost during your grey area years.
